Greenwashing Charlie

Heathrow Airport Limited has signed up to Prince Charles's "Terra Cata" (or Earth Carta) that puts "nature, people and planet at the heart of global value creation".
...While Heathrow's CEO said on the BBC news yesterday (Fri 8th Jan 2021) "For global Britain, you need a 3rdRunway at Heathrow. We need to have the connections to all the growing markets around the world - Asia, Africa and the Americas so that we can connect all of Britain to those global growing markets, and only an expanded heathrow will allow us to do that. Now its hard to imagine that just at the moment when the market is so low. But its not that demand is so low, there's massive pent up demands to fly from the UK; the problem is there arent many places you can fly to and we have these quarantines and testing regimes in place that make it very difficult for anyone to travel, but we will get through this, and if we are successful in rebuilding the UK economy, then within the next decade, we will absolutely need an expanded heathrow to help to make britain the succesful nation that we all want it to be."

Supreme Court Verdict out on 16th Dec 2020.
The Supreme Court will deliver its judgment on the Heathrow expansion case, next Wednesday, 16th December at 9.45am. The judgment will be delivered virtually due to the pandemic and as such "we will not be organising a demonstration". On the day of the judgment, you can tune in live, on the Supreme Court website: https://www.supremecourt.uk/live/court-01.html.

Campaign to attack Heathrow :
Heathrow is a Covid-19 perti dish.
Bankcrupt, Liquidation, Company Owners not green investors.
If Heathrow Airport overturns the full result of the Court of Appeal, or persuades the Supreme Court that no remedy should have been given by the Court of Appeal despite finding the ANPS is unlawful, then the current ANPS will be reinstated. Heathrow Airport could then make an application for development consent, and the battle against expansion would move to the planning arena. - https://friendsoftheearth.uk/climate-change/heathrow-airport-expansion-supreme-court-appeal-briefing

Protest Cancelled : - Due to the deadly Convid-19, we have cancelled any planned/organised protest outside the Supreme Court on the 7th Oct 2020.

...we feel that there are alternatives to protesting in large groups, and hope you will follow court proceedings online at https://www.supremecourt.uk/live/court-01.html

Plan B Earth and Friends of the Earth will be arguing for the Court of Appeal's February ruling to be upheld - as nothing has changed. You can find Plan B's submission to the Supreme Court here at https://planb.earth/plan-b-v-heathrow-expansion/ and Friends of the Earth webpage here

Below are just a few of the dozens of selfies sent in by our supporters this week, supporters who would have been at the Supreme Court protesting if it weren't for the deadly Convid-19.

It is expected that the Supreme Court's verdict will not be delivered until early in 2021. We will of course keep you updated.

Did anyone notice... at the beginning of Septemeber - at the end of School holidays, tens od thousands (with their kids) flew back home - in packed planes - to all round Britain, from the infected continent... and suddenly, the whole of Britain is going into the second wave of Convid-19?!? Heathrow and the airlines are responsible for us getting and spreading Convid-19!

June 2020 Coronavirus Update: Twitter says "Wanna Fly? Then die!" There's no such thing as social distancing on Public Transport. John Hollow-Kray says "This is not an air based disease". Covid-19 didnt walk to Britain from Wuhan! Hub-heathrow and its CEO are responsible for spreading Covid-19 to most of Britain and round the world! Close heathrow/Hillingdon Airport and save lives! John Hollow-Kray now says the 3rd Runway wont be required for atleast 10-15years!

7/8th Oct 2020 Supreme Court Protest

Come and join us at the Supreme Court (opposite Westminister Abbey) to protest "Heathrow's inner-London Airport appeal", against the Appeal Court's judgement on the Airports National Policy Statement for the 3rd Runway, 260,000 extra planes, taxiways, terminal 6 and 6b, and new cargo center. When the Judges rule against Heathrows appeal, we want them to say:-
"NO 3rd RUNWAY EVER AGAIN!"

On the 27th February 2020, the Appeal Court unanimously ruled that the government's Airport National Policy Statement (ANPS) was illegal, because the Government had not properly taken into account the UK responsibilities on carbon emissions, or commitments under the Paris Climate Change Agreement (limiting Global temperature rise to 1.5'c) when drawing up its plans to expand Heathrow. The ANPS document is now invalid in law, and will remain so until it is amended to rectify its deficiencies. It is for the Secretary of State for Transport to do that, but the Government declined to challenge the Appeal Court judgement. So Heathrow Airport Holding Limited (which is hoping to get the 3rd runway built) asked the Supreme Court for permission to appeal the Court decision.

The Supreme Court has announced that it will hear an appeal from Heathrow Airport Holding Limited on Wednesday 7th and Thursday 8th October 2020 for the plans to expand heathrow/Hillingdon Airport by adding a Third Runway. More details at AirPortWatch.org.uk

Other News

Heathrow Airport Holding Limited RAB is currently £17 BILLION in debit (Financial results), and with only 30% of its normal passengers, income has been cut to £10million a month. Heathrow Airport Holding Limited is currently borrowing/haemorrhaging/burning through:-

£100 MILLION a month in operating costs
£75 MILLION a month for debt and interest repayments
£90 MILLION a month for improvements (this amount will be reduced to 0!)
  =========
£250 MILLION current spend every month, will be reduced to £150 MILLION a month with 1000's of associated redundancies!

After paying a February dividend of over £100 MILLION to its foreign owners/shareholders, heathrow Airport Holding Limited's line of credit can only last till May of 2021 before declaring bankcrupcy and calling in the liquidators. Half of its staff (3500 workers) are on furlough being paid for by the government! AND Heathrow Airport Holding Limited still owes £113 MILLION in business rates - that Heathrow wants cancelled! The local Hillingdon Council only get £16million of this to clear up heathrows rubbish, street cleaning, medical/social care of the 80 million passengers and public services... with the rest going to central government and the GLA.

tourism deficit was &pound30 BILLION
Deficit

Lying Heathrow says a 3rd Runway will be good for Britain... in 2019, the tourism deficit was £30 BILLION - that is NOT good for Britain!
  - total spend of British residents abroad was £62 BILLION,
  - spending of overseas visitors in Britain £28 BILLION.
The New Economics Foundation has published two reports, showing the true costs of the 3rd Runway.

The Climate Emergency is being ignored. Every year, over 260,000 extra polluting flights would takeoff/land on the proposed 3rd Runway... and here the UK had:-
  - Floods in Feb 2020 (400%+ average rainfall in North England/Wales)
  - Droughts May 2020 (20% less average rainfall)
  - Sunniest Spring since records began (620hrs in 2020, prev record was 555hrs)

Did you know that the Airport Commission not only downplayed the crash risk of new runway, but got the word "crash" removed from report title! A 3rd Runway would bring the risk of the next expected plane crash forward by 10 years!

Dec 2019

We are awaiting the results "Judicial Review/Appeal" - hopefully before the 20th Dec 2019. The Courts close from 20th Dec till 13th Jan 2021.
ITV's - "Heathrow's controversial third runway 'could be blocked', according to Boris Johnson"

17th - 25th Oct 2019

The Court of Appeal has granted claimants against the Government's plans to expand Heathrow permission to appeal their claims in a hearing beginning on 17th October 2019. The Government had argued permission should be refused. Lord Justice Lindblom stated: "The importance of the issues raised in these and related proceedings is obvious."

There was a protest outside the High Court on the 17th October 2019.

Reacting to the decision, Paul Beckford, Policy Director of the No 3rd Runway Coalition, said: 'We welcome the Court of Appeal's recognition of the seriousness that the Heathrow expansion proposal brings. Our fight will continue to end the plans that would blight our environment and fall flat in the face of our climate emergency. We expect to win.'

Commenting ahead of the likely new prime minister taking office, Rob Barnstone, Coordinator of Stop Heathrow Expansion, said: 'Boris Johnson knows that Heathrow expansion cannot meet environmental targets, including on noise and air pollution. Mr. Johnson has indicated he will be following the legal and planning processes very carefully, then at the appropriate time the project can be cancelled. We don't expect any gimmicks but remain confident that Mr Johnson will stop this disastrous project, albeit at the correct time in the process. The decision by the Court of Appeal today may make that time a little sooner than previously thought.'

Heathrow Court of Appeal Granted 22nd July 2019

The Court of Appeal has granted claimants against the Government's plans to expand Heathrow permission to appeal their claims in a hearing beginning on 21 October 2019. The Government had argued permission should be refused. Lord Justice Lindblom stated:
'The importance of the issues raised in these and related proceedings is obvious.'

Reacting to the decision, Paul Beckford, Policy Director of the No 3rd Runway Coalition, said:

18th June - re Heathrows Consultation,

Robert Barnstone, Campaign Coordinator of Stop Heathrow Expansion, said:
'Heathrow's plans are laughable. Not only does it want to disrupt people's lives for up to 30 years whilst building this new runway but now proposes jumbo-size car parks whilst pledging to reduce the number of people using cars at the airport.
'How can anyone believe any of their pledges, and more worryingly, who is there to hold them to account when their promises are broken?'
'Looking to the next period ahead, Heathrow still has major legal hurdles to overcome - at the planning stage - where local authorities, the Mayor of London and environmental groups will be launching action, as per the advice of the judges in the most recent case.
'The new prime minister, whoever that may be, will have to face up to the fact that Heathrow expansion cannot meet legal environmental requirements and will therefore not be able to proceed in the long term.'

The consultation is typically complex and unclear, and for those residents who do not have time to complete it, you can still have your say. The easiest way is to answer question 8 - and state your opposition to the proposals. Please feel free to use this draft paragraph:

'I am opposed to the expansion of Heathrow Airport and the proposed additional 260,000 flights annually that this would deliver. My community is already blighted by noise and air pollution from aircraft and I object to any proposals that would result in an increase in this blight. The proposals in the consultation are very technical and require a high level of expertise to interpret. Owing to the absence of precise flight paths and comparative maps for existing aircraft operations, the real impact of the proposals on the community remains unclear. Consequently, I am also opposed to the introduction of an extra 25,000 flights per year. I do not support the proposed use of Independent Parallel Approaches (IPA) that would be required to allow these extra flights to occur. I believe that predictable and consistent respite from aircraft noise is essential for our communities. Therefore, I also support a night flight ban but believe that this should operate for a minimum of 8 hours.'

Thank you.
